Exam Overview

The APMLE is a series of three exams: Part I, Part II, and Part III.

Parts I and II evaluate a candidate’s knowledge across basic sciences and clinical subjects to confirm readiness for entry-level podiatric practice. Part III is the final exam for licensure, determining whether a candidate’s knowledge and clinical abilities are sufficient for safe, independent practice.

Part I

Basic

Sciences

The Part I examination samples the candidate’s knowledge in the following areas:

  • General Anatomy (including embryology, histology, genetics, geriatrics)
  • Lower Extremity Anatomy
  • Biochemistry
  • Physiology
  • Microbiology & Immunology
  • Pathology
  • Pharmacology

Part II

Clinical

Knowledge & Skills

The Part II examination assesses knowledge in the following areas:

  • Medicine
  • Radiology
  • Orthopedics, Biomechanics, and Sports Medicine
  • Anesthesia and Surgery
  • Community Health, Jurisprudence, and Research

Part III

Clinical

Competence

The Part III examination determines whether a candidate’s knowledge and clinical skills are sufficient for safe, unsupervised practice. It samples skills in evaluating, diagnosing, and treating patients. Examples of tested applications include:

  • Case presentations
  • Radiographs
  • Photographs
